Total Questions : 98 | Page 2 of 10 pages
Question 11. ____________ is used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture using wind.
  1.    Threshing
  2.    Sieving
  3.    Handpicking
  4.    Winnowing
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> Winnowing
:
D
During winnowing the mixture is released from a height. The wind blows away the lighter component while the heavier component falls down. Thus, resulting in the separation of the components of the mixture.
Question 12. Rashi found wheat grains mixed with powdered dry leaves. How can she separate the two of them easily? Explain the whole mechanism in detail. [5 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Explanation: 1 Mark each
1. She can separate the two easily by using the method of winnowing.
2. The method of winnowing is based on the principle that the lighterparticles will be blown away when air is blown through the mixture.
3. The mixture is taken to an open ground and is held while standing on a raised platform. The mixture is put on a plate or a sheet of paper. The plate or sheet of paper containing the mixture is held at shoulder level. It's slightly tilted downward so that the mixture slowly starts sliding out.
4.The plate is moved upwards and downwards in the air so that the mixture falls to the ground.
5. The driedleaves will scatterout because they are lighter and are carried away by the wind. The wheat forms a separate heap on the ground. Hence the two components are separated.

Question 13. What is the need for separation of materials? [1 MARK]
 Discuss Question

:
The purpose to separate the components of a mixture are:
(i) To separate unwanted or non-useful substances from useful substances.
(ii) To separate two useful substances if we want to use them separately.
Question 14. What are the various factors based on which substances are separated? [1 MARK]
 Discuss Question

:
The various factors which separation of substances depends on are:
i) Solubility
ii) Size of particles
iii) Weightof the particles
iv) Temperature difference in changing physical states
Question 15. Karan took a beaker and mixed ink and water in it. Will he be able to separate ink and water using decantation process? Explain it. When can we use decantation? [3 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Statement: 1 Mark
Explanation: 1 Mark
Use of decantation: 1 Mark
No, we cannot remove the inkfrom the water through decantation, since the mixture of ink and water formsa solution.
In the solutions, the particles are evenly mixed around, and will not form sediments.
Decantation canbe used fora mixture oftwo liquids which are not soluble into each other and forms distinct layers or it can be used to separate the components of asolid-liquid mixture in whichthesolid particles settles at the bottom and the clear liquid above it can be poured into another container.
Question 16. Raj's house was under construction. During the construction, he saw a man removing pebbles and stones using a plastic mesh held in a frame.Which method of separation is used here? Explain it in detail while also mentioning examples. [3 MARKS]

Method of separation: 1 Mark
Explanation: 1 Mark
Example: 1 Mark
The method of separation being used here is sieving in this case.
Sieving is used to separate substances that are of different sizes. In this method, a sieve is used. The smaller components of the mixture can pass through the pores of the sieve whereas bigger components of the mixture are retained by the sieve.
For example, wheat flour has some finely powdered wheat as well as some bigger impurities. When this flour is put through a sieve, the fine powder falls through the small holes in the sieve, while the thicker impurities remain as they are too big for these holes. And hence, the substances are separated from the mixture.
Question 17. A mixture of powdered salt and sugar can be separated by the process of winnowing.
  1.    True
  2.    False
  3.    Sieving
  4.    Decantation
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option B. -> False
:
B
Winnowing can be used for separation only in the case when the difference in mass of two substances is high. For example, husk and grains.
In case of salt and sugar the difference in mass is not significant. Hence, they can't be separated by winnowing. Instead, sugar and powdered salt can be separated by sieving due to difference in size of crystals.
Question 18. In churning milk, the need for churning out butter is to ________.
  1.    obtain milk
  2.    remove impurities
  3.    add impurity
  4.    get two useful components
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> get two useful components
:
D
Churning is the separation process to get useful components. In the process of churning out butter from milk, butter as well as milk is used for different purposes. Thus, weget two useful components after churning.
Question 19. After preparing tea, the need to filter tea leaves from tea is
  1.    To obtain tea
  2.    To add impurity
  3.    To remove impurities
  4.    To get two useful components
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> To get two useful components
:
D
Tea leaves are unwanted substances in the tea. So they are filtered out. But after separating them, even the filtered leaves are used as manure.
Question 20. Two or more substances when mingle together, but do not combine chemically forms a
  1.    Residue
  2.    Solution
  3.    Distillate
  4.    Mixture
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> Mixture
:
D
Mixture is formed bytwo or moreelements or compounds which are physically mixedtogether but not chemicallycombined. These substances retain their properties even after mixing.
