BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION MCQs
:
C
A Botanical Garden serves as a repository of different species of plants. These gardens help in the preservation of species that face the threat of extinction. Some Botanical Gardens also have cryopreservation facilities wherein the seeds of certain species are stored for future use.
:
B
Of the total number of species that have been catalogued so far, approximately 80% belong to the Animal Kingdom and the remaining, to the Plant Kingdom. New species get added to this list every year, and till date, most of them have been found to belong to the Animal Kingdom.
:
A
India currently has 448 Wildlife Sanctuaries. In addition, there are 90 National Parks and 14 Biosphere Reserves in India.
:
A
Japanese Kudzu vine is an example of alien species invasion. The vine was introduced in the southeast United States, where it went on to grow unchecked. It soon covered all plants and blocked all sunlight available for the plants. This happened because the natural predator for the vine was absent in the new ecosystem and therefore, there was no means to keep a control on the growth of these vines.
:
A
Habitat loss is a major cause for the extinction of species. Every species is adapted to survive in its own habitat. Once the habitat is destroyed, the species can no longer survive in an alien condition. This gradually results in extinction.
:
C
Sunlight is the primary source of energy for all life forms on earth. Since the tropical region is exposed to more sunlight than any other region, the area receives an abundance of solar energy, which promotes the growth of plants. As the flora of a region expands in number, the fauna also expands, as an abundance of vegetation apparently, makes it a favourable habitat to live in.
:
A
There are an estimated 200,000 varieties of rice in India alone. The diversity of rice in India is among the richest in the world. Basmati rice has 27 documented varieties grown in India.
:
A
Species diversity refers to the biodiversity that exists between different species of organisms in the same ecosystem as well as in different ecosystems.
:
D
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources) maintains a Red List, which contains a record of species, which have been categorised into nine groups based on how close they are to extinction. These include extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, least concern, data deficient and not evaluated. As the number of individuals of a particular species reduces, the closer the species would move towards the category of extinction.
:
A and B
Passenger pigeon and stellar sea cows have become extinct because of over-exploitation. Over-exploitation means harvesting species from the wild at rates faster than natural populations can recover. Over-fishing and over-hunting are both types of over-exploitation. The rhino and the red panda are both being over-exploited and are on the list of endangered animals.
