Question
Which was the first commercially grown, genetically engineered crop approved for human consumption?
Options:
A .  Potato
B .  Cotton
C .  Maize
D .  Tomato
Answer: Option D
:
D
The first commercially grown, genetically modified crop approved for human consumption and sale in the U.S., in 1994, was the Flavr Savr tomato. It had a longer shelf life, because it took longer to soften after ripening, while still allowing the tomato to retain its natural colour and flavour. The tomato was made more resistant to rotting by adding an antisense gene which interferes with the production of the enzyme polygalacturonase. It was produced by a Californian company Calgene that unfortunately did not make make a profit from Flavr Savr and hence stopped selling it in 1997.
