Lysosomes break down and digest food particles in a cell. They also help the cell to protect itself from pathogens, by forming a complex along with the pathogen, called phagolysosome. They also aid in recycling proteins and digesting  worn-out cells. Hence, they are known as the 'suicidal bags'.
