The Grand Banks is a large area of submerged highlands southeast of Newfoundland and east of the Laurentian Channel on the North American continental shelf.
It is in this area that the cold Labrador Current mixes with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The mixing of these waters and the shape of the ocean bottom lifts nutrients to the surface.
These conditions created one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Plankton is organisms that live in the water. They are carried by waves, tides and currents. They are usually found in shallow surface waters.
