Chlamydia is caused by Chlamydia Trachomatis. This bacteria, like viruses, is an intracellular pathogen meaning it can only survive within the cell of the host. It enters the host via vaginal or rectal intercourse with an infected partner. The cervix is first infected manifesting as cervicitis. The bacteria then spread upwards eventually finding their way to the fallopian tubes where they cause severe inflammation.
