Total Questions : 96 | Page 4 of 10 pages
Question 31. How do we dry our clothes? Where does the water go? Name the process. [3 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Process of drying clothes : 1 Mark
Fate of water : 1 Mark
Name of the process : 1 Mark
We dry our clothes by spreading them on a clothes line in an open area preferably where it gets ample sunlight.
When wet clothes are placed for drying, water changes into vapour as a result of heating. The water vapour so formed becomes a part of the air and cannot usually be seen. This process is called evaporation.
Question 32. Name the process through which plants release water vapour into the atmosphere. [1 MARK]
 Discuss Question

:
Plants release water vapourinto the atmospherethrough the process of transpiration.
Question 33. We use water in our daily lives for activities like bathing, washing clothes and utensils, drinking, etc. Mention two other uses of water. [2 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Each: 1 Mark
Apart from the above mentioned uses, water is used in
a) Irrigation - Water is used for watering crops.
b) Industries - Water is used for washing and cooling purposes.
Question 34. What do you understand by rain water harvesting? Why is it important? [5 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Definition : 2 Marks
Importance : 3 Marks

Rainwater Harvesting refers to the process where rainwater is gradually gathered and accumulated so that it can be used for agricultural, commercial or domestic purposes.
The importance of developing rainwater harvesting system areas follows:
1. The gathered rainwater can be used for agricultural purposes. The environment may be helped to get rid of the tendency to drought.
2. The requirement of water for feeding the live-stocks can be met.
3. The ever-increasing demand for water can be satisfied.
Question 35. Define Evaporation. [1 MARK]
 Discuss Question

:
Evaporation is the process in which a substance in liquid state is converted into gaseous state.
Question 36. Explain the technique behind rooftop rainwater harvesting. [5 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Each step: 1 Mark
The technique involved rooftop rainwater harvesting is as follows:
1. Rainwater is collected at the rooftop.
2. It is allowed to flow into pipes.
3. It is filtered through a wire mesh.
4. It is allowed to pour into an underground tank setup to store rainwater. These tanks contain layers of sand, gravel, charcoal that will filter the dirt and other impurities from rainwater.
5. This water seeps back into ground slowly to increase the level of ground water table.
Question 37. What steps can be taken to conserve groundwater? [3 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
1Mark each
Some steps to conserve groundwater are as follows:
1. All chemicals should be adequately disposed of.
2. The amount of fertilisers used on plants should be limited.
3. The sewage pipes should be free from leakage.
Chemicals, fertilisers and other toxic substances if not properly used can infiltrateto the groundwater and contaminate it.
Question 38. What is groundwater? [1 MARK]
 Discuss Question

:
Groundwater is the water located beneath the earth's surface in soil and in the fractures of rock formations.
Question 39. Name four conventional methods used for the purification of water? [2 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
Naming: 0.5 Marks each.
[Mention any 4]
The conventional methods used for the purification of water are as follows:

  1. Boiling

  2. Sedimentation

  3. 3 pole system of filtering

  4. Sieving through muslin cloth

  5. Using Alum

  6. Chlorination

Question 40. What do you think are the underlying factors behind the depletion of water table?  [5 MARKS]
 Discuss Question

:
1 Mark each
The factors responsible for the depletion of the water table are as follows:
(i) Increased population: As our population increases, correspondingly the demand for water also increased.
(ii) Increasing industries: The number of industries is on the rise ever since the human population began multiplying exponentially. These industries need water for various processes.
(iii) Lack of water conservation techniques: Rain is the main source of water for both surface and underground water bodies. Upon proper conservation, the groundwater can be increased. This has not yet been achieved due to lack of implementation of such water conservative techniques.
(iv) Agricultural activities: Our country depends vastly on its agricultural roots and the land that is used for cultivation has increased. Hence, water consumption has also increased. Groundwater is exploited as there is an irregularity in the rainfall. This results in the depletion of groundwater.
(v) Urbanisation: Large scale construction requires a lot of water and puts great stress on the water table.
