CONSERVATION OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS MCQs
:
A
There was a drastic reduction in the tigerpopulation due to habitat destruction and excessive hunting. Thus, it became an endangered species which was on the verge of extinction.
To counter this situation, Project Tigerwas launched in 1973 by the Government of India for conservation of tiger. The project aims at ensuring a viable population ofBengaltigersin their natural habitats and also to protect them from extinction. The main aim of this project was to limitfactors that leads to reduction of tiger habitats.
:
A
Deforestation means, cutting down of trees which affects the soil properties. The fertile top layer is removed which exposes the lower layers which have less humus and is less fertile. Due to this, the fertile land gets converted into deserts and this process is called desertification.
:
B
The roots of trees firmly hold the topmost layer of the soil. They do not allow natural forces like wind, water, etc., to carry away the top most fertile layer of the soil easily. Afforestation refers to the planting of trees in an area, which will prevent soil erosion.
:
A
Wildlife sanctuary provides protection to wildlife species from hunting, predation, competition or poaching. It is a heavily guarded area or a geographic territory, within which wildlife is protected in its natural habitat.
:
An increase in greenhouse gases, particularly CO2, is responsible for global warming, which is ultimately the cause of climate change.
:
C
Endemic species are those species of plants oranimals which are found exclusively in a particular area. They are not naturally found anywhere else. A particular type of animal or plant may be endemic to a zone, a state or a country. For example, kangaroos are endemic to Australia.
:
D
The following measures can be taken to reduce the environmental effects of deforestation:
(i) Recycling and reducing use: It takes 17 full grown trees to make one tonne of paper, hence reusing paper will reduce the need to cut down more trees. Using resources in a sustainable way i.e. reducing demand can help reducing deforestation.
(ii) Reforestation: Planting trees in deforested lands can help restore the area to some extent. If the same species of trees, which were cut, are replanted and the area is left undisturbed, the forest should reestablish itself.
(iii) Switching to renewable forms of energy: Reducing the use of firewood and using renewable energy can reduce deforestation.
:
A
The destruction of habitat, increasing population and introduction of new species disrupts the delicate environmental balance of the ecosystem. This can negatively affect the survival and sustenance of the native species of the habitat (endemic species) making them endangered species.
:
B
Hotspots are the areas of high endemism and high level of species richness. There aee some 34 hotspots identified. Out of which 3 of them occur in India- Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma and Himalaya. Hotspots cover less than 2% of the total area but contain around 44% of species.
:
B
Animals which are native to a particular area are called endemic fauna of that area. The endemic fauna of the Pachmarhi biosphere reserve include bison, Indian giant squirrel and flying squirrel.
