Answer: Option A. ->
:
Factors: 1.5 Marks
Water table: 1.5 Marks
There can be various factors affecting the quality of water. They are:
1) Presence of dissolved chemicals.
2) Presence of dissolved biological compounds.
3) Presence of mud, sand and other effluents.
The various reasons for the depletion of the water table are:
i) Increasing population.
ii) Industrial and agricultural activities.
iii) Deforestation and decrease in the effective area of seeping.
Question 112.

Analysis of differences: 1 Mark each
In order to win the contest, they should use less water. Let us analyze their usage.

Tom takes a bath in a swimming pool that too daily whereas jerry takes a bath only on Sundays. Swimming pools consume a lot of water as compared to bathing in the bathroom. So, Jerry conserves more water.

Drip irrigation is a technique to minimize water consumption for irrigation by using underground pipe system which delivers water directly to the base of the plant, whereas sprinklers use jets of water to irrigate which leads to wastage of water. Thus, Jerry conserves more water here too.

Again, collecting rainwater is a good practice to save water, This is called rainwater harvesting. So, Jerry wins this task.
Construction work consumes a lot of water and moreover increased population increases the use of water. So, in this activity also Jerry wins

Hence, we see that Jerry saves a lot of water in his activities and he wins the competition.

Water cycle can be explained through the following diagram,

Complete The Diagram And Explain The Whole Cycle. [5 MARKS]...
Water from the sea goes into the atmosphere through evaporation. There it gets converted into cloud through condensation. From the clouds, it reaches the ground through precipitation. It goes into groundwater through infiltration (seeping through the pores of soil) and from there it goes into the sea through groundwater runoff.  So, water needs to follow these steps to complete the cycle.

Question 114.

A village is facing acute shortage of water. Suggest measures to fix this issue. [5 MARKS]

Answer: Option A. ->

Measures: 5 Marks
There are many ways to solve the water shortage of the village.
1) The villagers should use modern irrigation methods like drip irrigation where water is supplied to the plants via an underground network of pipes. This saves water by supplying water directly to the roots and also inhibits wastage due to ground evaporation.

2) Deforestation or clearing of forests further increases wastage of water because tree roots hold rainwater and allow proper infiltration. In absence of trees, the rainwater will run off easily. So, the villagers should plant more and more trees.

3) Moreover, in order to solve the problem of drought, the villagers should build water collection tanks like Bawris or ponds.

4) Rainwater harvesting can also be done by the people where the rainwater is stored and used judiciously by the help of a network of pipes and tanks.
5) Household water can be used for watering plants.
