Question

Earthquake at two places were measured. The richter scale recorded the intensity as 2 and 4 respectively. If A and B are the magnitude of amplitudes at that places respectively, the amplitude can be compared as:

Options:
A .   B = 2A
B .   B = 4A
C .   B = 100A
D .   B = 1000A
Answer: Option C
:
C
Richter scale is not a linear scale but a logarithmic scale. In the richter scale the magnitude of next value is 10 times the previous value, like 1, 10, 100, 1000. For example, on this scale the vibration of an earthquake with a magnitude of 2 is 10 times greater in amplitude than an earthquake with magnitude of 1. Similarly a difference in magnitude of '2' implies a multiplication factor of 100 for the amplitude and 1000 times more destructive energy.
