Question

If x = 3 + 22, then the value of  \(\left(x-\frac{1}{x}\right)\) is :

Options:
A .  1
B .  2
C .  22
D .  33
Answer: Option B

\(\left(x-\frac{1}{x}\right)^{2} = x+\frac{1}{x}-2\)

= (3 + 22) + \(\frac{1}{(3+22)}-2\)

= (3 + 22) + \(\frac{1}{(3+22)}-2\times \frac{{(3-22)}}{{(3-22)}}-2\)

= (3 + 22) + (3 - 22) - 2

   = 4.

Therefore \(\left(x-\frac{1}{x}\right) = 2.\)
