Question

If an equilateral triangle of area  `x` and  a square of area `y` have the same perimeter than `x` is :

Options:
A .  equal to y
B .  greater han y
C .  less than y
D .  less than or equal to y
Answer: Option C

Let each side of the triangle be a cm and each side of the square be  b cm.

Then , `x =  sqrt(3)/4 a^2 and y = b^2`,

where  `3a = 4b, i.e.  b =  (3a)/(4)`

`:.`     `x = sqrt(3)/4 a^2 and  y = (9a^2)/(16)`                  `:.`   `[ b= (3a)/(4)]`

Now , `sqrt(3)/(4) a^2 = (1.732)/(4) a^2 = 0.433 a^2`

and  `(9a^2)/(16) = 0.5625 a^2`.

`:.`        `x < y`
