Question 31.

A man rows to a place 48 km distant and come back in 14 hours. He finds that he can row 4 km with the stream in the same time as 3 km against the stream. The rate of the stream is:

  1.    1 km/hr
  2.    1.5 km/hr
  3.    2 km/hr
  4.    2.5 km/hr
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option A. -> 1 km/hr

Suppose he move 4 km downstream in x hours. Then,

Speed downstream =   \(\left(\frac{4}{x}\right)\) km/hr

Speed upstream =    \(\left(\frac{3}{x}\right)\)  km/hr

So,  \(\frac{48}{(\frac{4}{x})} + \frac{48}{(\frac{3}{x})}= 14 or x=\frac{1}{2}\)

So, Speed downstream = 8 km/hr, Speed upstream = 6 km/hr.

Rate of the stream =  \(\frac{1}{2}\)  (8 - 6) km/hr = 1 km/hr

Question 32.  a man can row downstream at 18 kmph and upstream at 10 kmph. find the speed of the man in still water and the speed of stream respectively?
  1.    13, 3
  2.    12, 6
  3.    15, 3
  4.    14, 4
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> 14, 4
Explanation :
Question 33.  a man can row a boat at 20 kmph in still water. if the speed of the stream is 6 kmph, what is the time taken to row a distance of 60 km downstream?
  1.    0/6 hours
  2.    27/2 hours
  3.    30 hours
  4.    30/13 hours
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> 30/13 hours
Explanation :
Question 34.  a boat takes 9 hours to travel a distance upstream and takes 3 hours to travel the same distance downstream. if the speed of the boat in still water is 4 km/hr, what is the velocity of the stream ?

  2.    4 Km/hr
  3.    3 Km/hr
  4.    6 Km/hr
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option A. -> 2 Km/hr
Explanation :
Question 35.  a man takes twice as long to row a distance against the stream as to row the same distance in favour of the stream. the ratio of the speed of the boat (in still water) and the stream is
  1.    2:1
  2.    3:1
  3.    2:3
  4.    3:2
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option B. -> 3:1
Explanation :
Question 36.  a man can row 5 km/h in still water. if the speed of the current is 1 km/h, it takes 3h more in upstream than in the downstream for the same distance. the distance is:
  1.    36 km
  2.    24 km
  3.    20 km
  4.    32 km
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option A. -> 36 km
Explanation :
Question 37.  speed of a boat in still water is 8 kmph and speed of stream is 1.5 kmph. a man rows to a place at a distance of 61.75 km and come back to starting point. the total time taken by him.
