Question
In an examination, a student had to obtain 33% of the maximum marks to pass. He got 125 marks and failed by 40 marks. The maximum marks were
Options:
A .  800
B .  600
C .  1000
D .  500
Answer: Option D
Answer: (d)
Let the maximum marks be x.
${x × 33}/100 = 125 + 40 = 165$
x = ${165 × 100}/33 =500$
Using Rule 24,
a = 33%, b = 125, c = 40
Maximum marks = ${(b + c)}/a × 100$
= ${(125 + 40)}/33 × 100$
= ${165 × 100}/35 = 500$
