Question
In an examination, 52% students failed in Hindi and 42% in English. If 17% failed in both the subjects, what percentage of students passed in both the subjects ?
Options:
A .  23%
B .  33%
C .  18%
D .  38%
Answer: Option A
Answer: (a)
Let the total number of students = 100
Number of students who failed in Hindi or English or both
= 52 + 42 – 17 = 77
Number of students who passed in both subjects
= 100 – 77 = 23%
Required percentage = 23
Using Rule 23,
a = 52%, b = 42%, c = 17%
Passed candidates = 100 – (52 + 42 – 17)
= 100 – (94 – 17) = 100 – 77 = 23%
